Why does experience count in plumbing?

Just like pipes, plumbers come in all shapes and sizes. And unfortunately, some will fail to deliver the best services. Cheap materials in a construction project are more likely to cause problems down the line. And cheap plumbers can be just as unreliable.

The more experience, the better. You don't really want to hire a plumber, who has only had his plumber's license for a very short period of time. We have known cases where people have hired plumbers who don't even have a license!

When looking to hire a plumber, it pays to do your research. Hiring the first plumber you find in the phone book or Google listing can get you a great job at the best price, but you're taking a risk. When choosing a plumbing contractor, it pays to read materials and ask questions to learn as much as possible about the contractor or company before making a decision.

What to look for

The first thing you should look for in a plumber is that they are registered. Each state and territory has an agency that administers plumbing permits. A licensed plumber will need to follow a number of legal guidelines to ensure they meet all the requirements of the job, and they will need to provide you with a certificate of compliance upon completion to confirm that the job meets the standards of the occupation.

To narrow down your area, look for experienced plumbers in your area. Are you looking for business or residential services, emergency repairs or new construction?

Be sure to check some basic information. Find out if it is an established or new business. Of course, plumbers have to start the job, but knowing the extent of the contractor's experience will help you decide if they're the best fit for your project.

Make sure the company or contractor is clear about their qualifications, experience and activities. Always check the company's contact details, including a landline, mobile phone number and mailing address. Knowing exactly who you are dealing with is the first step to ensuring a successful transaction.

Quote and references

An experienced, qualified and trustworthy plumber will be happy to provide a written estimate. Be sure to read it carefully and ask questions to make sure you know exactly what is included and where the extra charges might fall. Also look for references or reviews, which can be useful tools to help you make the right decision.

Be aware of the scam

Of course, it goes without saying that you should always keep an eye out for potential scammers. Never assume, for example, that someone knocking on your door pretending to be a plumber really is! It's the same for ads on the net. Don't be lured by the cheaper rates on offer.
